How to Import from China: A Step-by-Step Guide

Importing from China is manageable when every step is confirmed in advance. This guide walks through the process from inquiry to delivery.

1. Confirm the supplier and Incoterm

Agree on FOB, CIF, EXW or DDP first. The Incoterm determines who arranges freight, insurance and customs. For new importers, FOB is often the easiest way to control logistics costs.

2. Booking and documents

Typical documents include the commercial invoice, packing list, export declaration, bill of lading or air waybill, and certificate of origin where required. HS codes affect duty and regulatory requirements, so confirm them early.

3. Import clearance

Prepare your tax ID, EORI or importer registration, and check whether inspection, certification or labeling is required. For DDP shipments, confirm who bears duty and VAT.

4. Delivery and receipt

Confirm the delivery address, unloading conditions, appointment requirements and insurance coverage to avoid unexpected last-mile charges.
